In 1933, when Reginald B. Newman bought his first coal truck as a means to support his family, he probably never imagined the growth that would occur over the next 80 years. Headquartered in Tonawanda, NOCO Inc., began as R.B. Newman Fuel Company and delivered coal to homes. In the1940s, as the demand for coal decreased, the company started delivering home heating oil. By the 1950s, the company was well on its way to success and started supplying small commercial and industrial customers with gasoline, diesel, and lubricants.
Reginald¹s two sons, Donald and Reginald II, followed in their father's footsteps by joining the company in the late 1950s. They continued to grow the business by broadening NOCO's product lines and marketing area.
In 1973, NOCO acquired a fuel terminal with over 42-million gallons of petroleum storage capacity, making them a respected leader in the energy industry, both locally and nationally. In the early 1980s, NOCO opened its first retail convenience store and gas station. In the 1990s, NOCO expanded its lubricant distribution market to the Eastern New York and New England areas and also began distributing propane to residential and commercial customers across Western New York.
In 2001, Jim and Mike Newman were named President and Executive Vice President, respectively, carrying the business into the third generation. Under this leadership, NOCO has expanded its product portfolio to include natural gas and electricity, and has grown to be one of the largest independent fuel and lubricant distributors in the Northeast.
In 2011, NOCO completed a major rebuild of the
convenience store next to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport,
featuring new convenient amenities for customers such as an airport kiosk
check-in with the ability to print boarding passes. This store also features several environmentally friendly building technologies to
reduce energy consumption. Through several acquisitions and new
ventures in recent years, NOCO now supplies energy products to
commercial and residential customers across New York, Pennsylvania, West
Virgina, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. NOCO¹s reach also expands into Canada serving customers throughout Eastern
Ontario and Southern Quebec. "Throughout the years there have been many companies
in our industry that have come and gone, but NOCO is proud
to remain headquartered in the Western New York region and stay
true to our roots," said Mike Newman.
Investing in the community has always been an important part of NOCO's culture. With over 650 employees residing in the communities we serve, NOCO works alongside Western New York families and businesses to energize our neighborhoods. NOCO expands its reach and impact by partnering with organizations that understand how to best meet the needs of our community.
Some of NOCO's key partners include the United Way, Buffalo Sabres Green Team, Boys & Girls Club of the Northtowns, and the Buffalo Zoo. NOCO also supports organizations such as the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and the Buffalo Museum of Science.
"Mike and I grew up in Western New York we raise our families here and continue to grow NOCO locally. We enjoy giving back to the community," said Jim Newman. NOCO employees are eager to volunteer, participating in events such as the Ride for Roswell, Corporate Challenge, and Light the Night Walk.
2012, NOCO was able to donate over $200,000 to local charitable
